Queen Kristina of Sweden is one of the recurring characters in Young Royals. She is portrayed by Pernilla August.

Background[]
Queen Kristina was born and raised as the Crown Princess, and later Queen, of Sweden. She is an only child, and has one first cousin, the deceased Carl Johan Horn of Årnäs. She has two sons, Erik and Wilhelm, and is married to Duke Ludvig.
Throughout the Series[]
Season 1[]
Queen Kristina is shown with the rest of the royal family, Ludvig, Crown Prince Erik, and Prince Wilhelm, before and during Wilhelm's apology video. She and her husband make the decision to send Wilhelm to Hillerska, a boarding school, which frustrates Wilhelm, but Kristina chastises him roughly. When he exhibits anxious behavior by biting his nails, the Queen doesn't seem to take it seriously, slapping his hand away. In response to Wilhelm's text to come home, she simple writes, "you'll feel better soon."
Queen Kristina struggles with her grief after Erik's death, clinging to Wilhelm during the funeral, having trouble eating, and trying to hide her pain with a cold demeanor.
After Wilhelm's sex tape is leaked, Queen Kristina visits Hillerska to address the issue. She is curt with the faculty, but gentle when she visits Wilhelm in his room. For the sake of the monarchy, she doesn't want Wilhelm to visit Simon, and she believes it will be best to deny that it is him in the video. She meets Simon briefly before they leave for the palace, and she shakes hands with him, looking perplexed. When they are in the car, Kristina urges Wilhelm to think of how people will react to him if he admits who he truly is, and encourages him not to throw away his love for an unfortunate romance. She admits that she too once had such a romance.
After Wilhelm finds out that August leaked the video, and confronts him angrily, he calls Queen Kristina, who admits that she knew it was August. When he asks why she didn't tell him, she tries to explain that her need to protect Wilhelm will give Erik's death meaning, but he hangs up abruptly in anger.
Season 2[]
Opens with the suggestion that Wilhelm has refused to talk to his mother all holiday, with her begging him not to go into Erik's room, and to talk to her before he goes back to school. When he arrives and finds out he is due to make a speech, he angrily calls his mother, who tells him he should have talked to her sooner, and he would have known. Kristina takes his call in front of members of her team, and puts Wilhelm on speaker as he threatens to step down from his position as Crown Prince and go to the press. She sends Jan-Olof to remove her son from Hillerska, and following his angry outburst, answers the phone to him whilst she is on the plane. She agrees to let Wilhelm stay at the school and to take away his security detail in exchange for doing the speech. She also says they can talk more seriously about his relationship with Simon once he has turned 18. In episode 3, she asks August to the palace, where she informs him of his new role as Wilhelm's backup, making sure to let him know she is not entirely happy with this decision. Wilhelm calls his mother in episode 5, saying he will not do the speech unless Simon is allowed to sing his song at the jubilee. She breaks the news to him that August will be his backup, and will do the speech if he refuses. In the final episode of the season, Queen Kristina and her husband come to the school. They eat dinner with an angry and stressed Wilhelm, and attend the 120-year anniversary celebrations the next day. Wilhelm goes off-script, and Kristina seems frustrated with her son.

Kristina has a calm and self-possessed demeanor, sharp blue eyes and dark hair. She often wears jewelry.
Personality[]
Kristina is attentive, loyal, severe, and authoritarian. The choices she makes are for the good of the country and the monarchy, not based on her own personal feelings or the feelings of even her children. Although she loves both Wilhelm and Erik, her relationship with Wilhelm is strained due to his "unproper" behavior. And whether she means to or not, Kristina often compares Wilhelm's shortcomings to Erik's perfection throughout the series.
